Station Announces Plans To Build Casino In Reno

Las Vegas gaming giant Station Casino today announced plans to build a casino on a site it owns near a convention center in Reno.

The company said it has not decided when to develop the $50-$70-million project. But the station applied Monday for special use permits to build on about eight acres of land along South Virginia Street, across from the Reno-Spark Convention Center.

The station plans 84,000 square feet of gaming and entertainment space, sportsbooks, 24/7 cafes for outdoor dining, and two quick-service spaces.

The company said it had long been interested in the Reno market, which made "significant land purchases" in the region more than a decade ago. While the recession put plans on hold, the station's interest has been revived by "recent expansion and diversification" of the northern Nevada economy, according to a company statement.

To advance the plan, the station must submit an application to the Nevada State Gaming Commission to allow the transfer of game licenses owned by its grandfather from the Reno Turf Club. The company said the transfer is permitted under state law, as well as Reno city law and agreements with the city.

"We are very excited about the Reno market and look forward to working with the city and state to secure the approval needed to build high-quality gaming facilities," Station spokesperson Laurie Nelson said in a company statement.

The Reno project will create 350 construction jobs and 150 to 200 jobs upon completion, according to the station.

The station currently operates 19 large and small casinos in Southern Nevada, including red rock resorts, green valley ranches and station-branded properties. The company also manages two tribal casinos in Northern California and Michigan.

The development of plans in Reno comes months after Station completed the initial public offering of Red Rock Resorts Inc., a new company name that has raised more than $531 million. In May, the company announced that it had signed a deal to acquire Off-Strip Farms Resorts for $312.5 million.
