'Warm' due to Hwang Hee-chan's injury, Wolves offensive line virtually ‘annihilated’ no striker
Hwang Hee-chan wasn't the only one who put a strain on his hamstring.
Hwang Hee-chan's teammate Pedro Neto also grabbed his hamstring and exited and pulled out all Wolves' claws.
Wolverhampton won 2-1 at home in the 28th round of the 2023-2024 Premier League against Fulham at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton on the 10th (KST).
Rayan Atnuri scored the first goal in the 7th minute of the second half, and Tom Kenny's own goal in the 22nd minute of the second half gave him a two-goal lead. Alex Iwobi scored a chasing goal in the 53rd minute of the second half, but it was too late for Fulham.
Wolverhampton lost the last round and gained three points, moving up to eighth place (12-5-11, 41 points).
Wolverhampton, however, was injured again. Jean-Rickne Belegard, a left-back, collapsed in a collision with his opponent. With his knee down, he was eventually sent off the field and replaced by Thomas Doyle 10 minutes into the first half.
On top of that, Neto, who started as a right striker, grabbed his left hamstring as soon as he tried to break through by speeding up in the 41st minute of the first half.
Feeling in pain, Neto stopped penetrating and immediately signaled to the bench that he could not. Manager Gary O'Neill, who watched this, was frustrated and immediately prepared to replace him. He was eventually replaced by Totti Gomes before the end of the first half.
"Neto's injury is a hamstring, but I'm not sure if it's going to be prolonged," O'Neill said in a post-match press conference. "The medical team is difficult. They came to me and told me what was going on and came to the press conference. There's more work to be done. There's a lot of them," he said.
"Neto had a great week. He was already tested and had no damage to his muscles. He trained well. I was really disappointed. It makes me wonder if it was the right decision to let him run. Of course, it was a decision I had to accept. I was frustrated. He worked really hard to come back," he said.
"We're hopeful and the medical staff don't think it's a long-term injury like his first hamstring injury, but testing will go ahead and we'll see the results before we go ahead," O'Neill said.
Neto missed eight weeks earlier this season with a right hamstring injury. And this time it was a hamstring injury in the opposite leg.
Manager O'Neill said Neto had an discomfort in his hamstring after an away game at Newcastle on the 9th. "He said his hamstring was tight and he had a few days off, but he felt good," he said. "We didn't want to take any chances, so we asked him to get tested and we got several opinions. He looked perfect and there was nothing wrong with his hamstring," he explained.
"I went to Neto's house on Thursday and left the rest of the players to check on him and we got a good result. Neto looked and got better on Friday. Everyone said he was fine and there was no reason not to play," he said. "I said there was nothing," he said, adding that his performance was good.
