Six years at Tottenham, but his heart was elsewhere
Eurelio Gomes has been at Tottenham Hotspur for a whopping six years. But despite his longevity, he hasn't adapted easily to life at Spurs.
Gomes is a Brazilian goalkeeper who has spent over 15 years of his career in Europe. He began his European career with PSV Eindhoven in 2004, where he excelled, making 181 appearances and keeping 91 clean sheets in four seasons. He also played in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) for many years, and in 2004-05, along with Park Ji-Sung and Lee Young-Pyo, he helped PSV reach the top four of the UCL.
He said goodbye to PSV at the end of the 2007-08 season. His next stop: Tottenham. They had a former PSV teammate, Lee Young-pyo, but by the time Gomes arrived, Lee had moved to Dortmund, so the reunion didn't happen.
Thanks to his performances at PSV, he quickly established himself at Tottenham. He became the first-choice goalkeeper in his first year and made 95 league appearances in 토토 hree seasons. However, he was pushed as a candidate for the 2011-12 season and lost his place completely in 2012-13 due to the arrival of Hugo Lloris.
Gomes stayed in London for almost six years before leaving Spurs for good in 2014-15. But he didn't warm to Spurs easily. He was nostalgic for PSV. In an interview with Dutch outlet Voetbal4U, he said: "I left (PSV) in 2008. But my heart remained in PSV for a long time. That's why it was difficult for me to adapt to Tottenham. It's exactly because of that."
"My body left the club, but my heart stayed at PSV. The club was special to me. Because of what I achieved there. I felt like PSV was home. Every time I come to PSV, I say that I feel like I'm dreaming. PSV still feels like home to me," he added.
After leaving PSV in 2008, Gomes never returned to the club as a 'player'. However, after his retirement, he returned to PSV as an ambassador in 2022 and has remained active to this day.
