Alcaraz crashes out of Australian Open quarterfinals after 1-3 loss to Tsverev

Last year's Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz (2nd-Spain) has crashed out of the men's singles quarterfinals at the Australian Open (A$86.5 million-$76.1 million in prize money).

Alcaraz lost 1-3 (1-6 3-6 7-6<7-2> 4-6) to Alexander Tsverev (No. 6-Germany) in the men's singles quarterfinals on day 11 of the tournament in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday.

Alcaraz, a 2003-born rookie who won the 2022 US Open and last year's Wimbledon, was tipped to challenge Novak Djokovic (No. 1-Serbia) for the title at the tournament, but failed to break through the quarterfinal barrier.

Alkaras, who holds a slim 3-4 head-to-head advantage over Tsverev, suffered his second straight loss to the Russian.

Tsverev will play Danil Medvedev (3rd-Russia) in the quarterfinals.

The men's singles semifinals are now down to Djokovic-Yannick Cigner (No. 4-Italy) and Medvedev-Tsverev.

After dropping the first set just 29 minutes into the match, Alcaraz was disappointed not to break his opponent's serve to take a 3-2 lead in the second game.

Alcaraz had a double break point opportunity at 15-40 on Tsverev's service game, but missed four consecutive points to go up 4-2.

Instead, he broke his own serve twice in the ensuing game to shift the momentum completely in Tsverev's favor.

Down 2-5 in the third set, Alcaraz made a dramatic comeback by winning the next three games and seemed to have the momentum behind him as he took the third set to a tiebreak.

However, three consecutive backhand unforced errors at 4-4 in the fourth set cost him the break and pushed the match to a fifth set.

Tsverev reached the quarterfinals of a major for the seventh time in his career. This is his first quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open in four years after 토토사이트 reaching the last four in 2020, and his best result at a major is a runner-up finish at the 2020 US Open.

Heading into the tournament, Alcaraz had been in the news for allegedly abusing his model ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea, who went on trial in Germany in May.

The women's singles semifinals get underway on Friday, followed by the men's quarterfinals on Saturday.
